As a web designer, quoting out a project to take into account IE 6,7,8 can almost double the cost, due to the amount of work needed to satisfy those browsers. I'd say the WebKit initiative is trying to help the situation, but it's far from ready. I also think android is going to have a serious amount of trouble once its OS spreads to over a dozen pieces of hardware...each capable of running Android OS.
